Passing of Dick "Sailmeister" Nielson

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Just received word from his widow of the passing of my sailmate, good friend, First Commodore of Las Vegas Bay Macgregor Association, Dick "Sailmeister" Nielson.  Dick and I formed the LVBMA in 1997 to be an alternative to the existing sailboat clubs on Lake Mead.  I will miss my sailmate and the wonderful world solutions we agreed upon as we sailed Lake Mead together.

As sailors have a tendency to do when the wind is right and there is nothing to do but enjoy the wind in the sails, Dick told me his whole life story including his many years in the Army, later the 82 Airborne, and even later as ground crew member of the USAF U-2 contingent which had flights over Cuba in 1962. i gave him the nickname "Sailmeister" due to his constant trimming of the sails on my boat. He commented once that he enjoyed the nickname and what it represented.

I am sorry to hear about Dick Nelson departing this realm, Dick was a nice guy.
I only met Him in person once back in 2000 along with you Capt Kimo as we were headed to Mexico with our brand new Mac X. I have to say again that You and Dick and Richard were a lot of help getting me ready for the Baja and the Sea of Cortez.
